Fremont Lake

The High Desert Coast. Wyoming's second largest natural lake is just three miles from Pinedale. Sitting at the base of the mountains, it is a deep, glacial lake that serves as the perfect backdrop for an afternoon on the water or the ice.

Summer on the Water. When the sun is up, the lake is the hub for kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. We have sandy beaches that feel like a hidden coast and boat rentals available for exploring the deeper reaches. If you are here at the right time, you can catch the annual Sailing Regatta under the peaks.

The Winter Hub. The adventure doesn't stop when the lake freezes. In the winter, the thick mountain ice becomes a playground for ice fishing, skating, and snowmobiling.

Any Season. Whether you are here for a high speed boat ride or a quiet morning on the shore, Fremont Lake is worth an afternoon in any season. It offers some of the best Wind River Range views in the state without ever leaving the shoreline.

Gateway to the Yellowstone Ecosystem

The Southern Entry. Pinedale is the southern entrance of the Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest intact temperate ecosystem in the lower 48 states. Grand Teton National Park is just 90 minutes north, and the South Entrance of Yellowstone is roughly two-and-a-half hours up US 191.

The Open Corridor. Unlike the northern approaches that funnel millions of visitors through the same gates, the southern corridor stays quiet. Here, the wildlife is real and the roads are open. You get the same legendary landscapes without the lines. This is the way Wyoming was meant to be seen.

Green River Lakes

The Iconic View. Located about 52 miles north of Pinedale, this is one of the most photographed spots in the state. The jade-green water sits at the base of the range, perfectly reflecting the sheer, iconic face of Squaretop Mountain.

Ice Skating & Hockey

In Pinedale, life moves to the ice as soon as the temperature drops. Whether it is a fast-paced local game or a quiet morning on the lake, we have the facilities and the terrain to make the most of the season.

The Sublette County Ice Arena. The local arena is a full-service facility and the heart of the region's ice sports. With ice available 11 months out of the year, it offers everything from skate sharpening and a pro shop to rentals. Hockey is a way of life here; we recommend checking the schedule for local league games — the energy is unmatched. For a more relaxed pace, they offer regular public skate and "stick and puck" hours for all ages.

The Wild Ice. When the winter conditions are right, the skating moves outside to Fremont Lake and Half Moon Lake. There is nothing quite like skating on thick, clear mountain ice with the Wind River Range as your backdrop. It is some of the most spectacular outdoor skating you will find anywhere in the West.

Live Music & Festivals

A community that knows how to gather. Summer in Pinedale has a real social calendar. This isn't a sleepy mountain town; it's a community that knows how to gather. From open-air stages to local craft beer, the energy here is authentic. Nothing imported. All local.

Pinedale Fine Arts Council Concerts: Throughout the summer, the local arts council runs a free outdoor concert series. These aren't just local acts — they draw incredible talent to the American Legion Park for evenings under the peaks.

Wind River Brew Fest: Held in September, this brings together the best craft brewers from across the state for a weekend worth planning your trip around. It is the definitive celebration of Wyoming's mountain-town brewing culture.

Mountain Biking & Trail Running

The Rides: The mountain biking near Pinedale is epic and largely undiscovered. The Sublette Trails Association maintains an extensive network across the region, ranging from technical singletrack that pushes into the Wind River Range to accessible loops for all skill levels. If you are looking for a relaxed, family-friendly option, the Olivia Pope Trail offers a paved path right in town.

The Runs: In Wyoming, most hiking routes double as premier trail runs. Whether you are training for an ultra or just looking for a morning loop with a view, our trails provide the vertical and the terrain to test any athlete. Bring the legs.

The Mule Deer & Pronghorn Migrations

Twice a year, between 4,000 and 5,000 mule deer traverse a 150-mile corridor through Sublette County in the longest recorded ungulate migration in the lower 48 states. The Red Desert to Hoback migration funnels through a 400-meter-wide passage at the Fremont Lake Bottleneck, right outside Pinedale.

In spring, they move north in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. In the fall, they return south. The pronghorn antelope migration through Sublette County follows a similar path and is one of the longest in the continental United States.

Road & Trail Races

If you're coming to test your lungs at 7,000+ feet, Pinedale has a race for every season.

Midnight on the Mesa. July. A unique night-run experience under the massive Wyoming sky. It features a half-marathon, 10K, and 5K, plus a 6-hour relay for those who want to see how many miles they can clock before the sun comes up.

Race to Raise. September. (Formerly the Pinedale Half Marathon.) This is the local classic — a challenging out-and-back half-marathon and 10K that takes you from town toward the shores of Fremont Lake. It's the perfect way to see the fall colors and experience the high-desert air.

The Drift (Human Powered). March. As mentioned, this is the winter version of the historic cattle drive. Whether you're running the 13-mile half, the 28-mile marathon, or the 100-mile ultra, you are competing against the elements in the highest-elevation winter race in the country.

Skijoring

Out here, it is done with horses. A skier, a horse, a snow course, and full speed. This is a Wyoming winter tradition done properly in Pinedale. It is part rodeo, part alpine race, and entirely unique to the region.

The Races. Pinedale is home to some of the most competitive skijoring in the state, drawing top-tier riders and skiers for high-stakes weekend events. Snowmobiling

Sublette County is home to over 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails that cut through some of the most dramatic winter terrain in the West. From wide-open mountain meadows to high-country forests, the riding here offers views that will stop you mid-throttle.

The Merna Connection: For the real Wyoming experience, head to the North Horse Creek Trailhead near Merna. This is the primary gateway to the Wyoming Range and the legendary Greys River drainage. It's where you'll find the deep powder and big-mile loops that the crowds haven't touched. Whether you're staying on the groomed path or dropping into the backcountry, this is a world-class playground that feels entirely your own.

Wind River Range Hiking & Backpacking

The High Country. The Wind River Range is one of the most pristine and undervisited wilderness areas in America. The Bridger Wilderness alone covers 428,000 acres of the Bridger Teton National Forest. With over 1,300 lakes and hundreds of miles of trail, it offers a level of solitude you simply cannot find in the national parks.

Day Hikes. You don't have to go deep to see the best of it. Local favorites like Seneca Lake, Lost Lake, Photographers Point, and the Fremont Lake Rim offer massive payoffs within a day's trek. Most of these begin at Elkhart Park, our main trailhead and the gateway to the high country.

Multi Day and Backpacking. For those going further, the range holds legendary destinations. Titcomb Basin, Cirque of the Towers, and the Glacier Trail Loop are world class routes that draw mountaineers and backpackers from across the globe.

The Peaks and Trails. Gannett Peak is the highest summit in Wyoming at 13,804 feet. It is a serious objective for serious climbers. Pinedale is also a primary gateway for the Continental Divide Trail. Thru hikers regularly pass through our doors to resupply, recover, and gear up for the next leg of their journey.
